Critical Symposium is an artistic research forum that convenes once a month virtually to engage in critical discourse with multidisciplinary artists and creative practitioners from around the globe within the premise of critical, responsive and research-based art practices to locate practice with research and to foster interdisciplinary knowledge, collaboration and exchange.︎︎︎

Our second Critical Symposium, entitled Politics and Poetics of Care︎︎︎ considered the defining and blurring of boundaries in relation to these two terms. Does our current political attitude to care negate the poetic or can the poetic cause a shift in the political? We considered care when enacted as part of a paid or unpaid ‘job’, care as something we might enact and consume: a cyclical symbiotic interaction. We spoke too, on the categorisation of the bodies that have care bestowed upon them and those that are left without it and finally, care in the aftermath of trauma: how it might heal, bring anew and make space for growth....(read more)︎︎︎

Forum Synopsis:
The introductory forum of Critical Symposium will take place on zoom on 30th July 2023 from 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM attending to the theme of Choreographic Practices. The panelists comprising of art practitioners with diverse research-based practices will approach the topic in the theme’s broadest sense so as to expand upon and build new nodal linkages as to what a critical choreographic practice can come to mean.


Mujtaba Asif: London-based Karachi-born artist explores themes such as the fragility of peace, hierarchies in human suffering, and psychological and emotional loss. Instagram / Website / RCA2023

Junshu Gu: London-based artist, writer, and flâneur. Intertwining discourses around anxiety, escapism, and post-truth, her work is rooted in rhizome theory and draws from her multi-year interdisciplinary culture-related work experience. Instagram / Website / RCA2023

Tony Jacob: Artist, researcher and writer from India curently based in London, working across the discourse of the body and social control examining the gendered and racialised subjectivity of the body. Instagram / Website / RCA2023

Priysha Rajvanshi: Indian artist using photography as a mode to reflect aspects of environments and bodies, weaving together a narrative that advocates for healing. Instagram / Website / RCA2023

Laura Selby: London-based sound artist and violinist who’s research focuses on sonic contamination and the interconnection between the biological networks within and beyond us, that make up our way of being. Instagram / Website / RCA2023

Ran Zhou: Multimedia artist and filmmaker based in London and Vancouver, Zhou’s practice investigates how the pharmaceutical industry, the pornography industry, and late capitalism are integrated in the cycles of social control through the regulation of bodies. Instagram / Website / RCA2023
